Ankle Sprain
What it Effects
- The ligaments around the ankle, most commonly the anterior talofibular ligament on the outside of the ankle
Who it Effects
- Common in sports such as football
Mechanism of Injury
- Twisting of the foot inwards and less commonly outwards
Signs and Symptoms
- Depends on the degree of the sprain
- Pain on movement and touch
- Swelling
- Decreased range of movement
Treatment
- PRICE
- Crutches
- Encourage weight bearing gradually
- Range of movement exercises
- Proprioception exercises
- Ultrasound
- Plyometric exercises
- Theraband exercises (resistance)
Additional Information
- It is very important to include proprioception exercises into a rehabilitation programme to reduce the likelihood of sustaining another sprain after recovery
