Punching muscles

Postby johnnyk » Fri Aug 29, 2008 3:52 pm

What muscles are used in punching? I am assuming different muscles for different punches; but what is the best way to train punching muscles?

I'm going to let Rick field this one.

When you look at the mechanics of a punch it starts from your feet and works through your body ending with your fist.

There would be no alternative way to develope a punch other than punching with correct form.

Just my thoughts and experience, I could be wrong.

Hmmm I seem to have fallen asleep on this post; sorry.

Anyhow. Phil is right. There is no better way to train the exact muscles used for every punch then to simply throw that punch. Do a few power drills and you will really give them a work over.

In the sport of boxing, it is a good idea not to let your opponents gloves touch your face...

Because you have no idea where those gloves have been.

Even if you did train every single day to perfect a punch it's not likely you'll be able to pull it off in a full-on-fist fight..

Sorry I should have been more specific. In a boxing match I meant- you can't put yourself in a ring and depend solely on a power punch, no matter how hard you train to perfect this punch. I dominate those punching machines you'll find in pubs etc, maxing some of them, yet when it comes to the ring I've been bounced about by lads two as small as me...

Anyone who does any kind of combat sport knows that you dont train just one thing and make that your game.
You train as much as you can on as many different things as you can.
You master some and use the rest as backups.
If you are excellent at a particular punch/technique then you will be able to set it up and use it more often than you think.

But comparing an arcade machine to a fight is just plane daft.

It was a prime example of why you shouldn't depend solely on a punch...
